Can anything besides eating and not eating make my blood sugar go up or down?

Blood sugar often goes up when you have an infection the flu, the common cold, stomach upsets. Major surgery and pregnancy cause a rise. Then there are a number of drugs that tend to raise blood sugar. Caffeine, oral contraceptives, estrogen, and cortisone are the most important to know about. Emotional tension also causes blood sugar to swing upward. Besides being lowered by fasting or by insufficient food, blood sugar goes down when you exercise strenuously. Among drugs with a lowering effect are alcohol (when you don't eat while drinking), large doses of aspirin, blood-thinning drugs, barbiturates, and sulfonamides.
